The ground breaking for the new Cochrane Seniors Retirement Complex will take place on April 1 and will be ready for occupancy on Dec 10 said David Butler, Financial Controller and Business Manager for CGV Builders.

“Right now we are at 67 percent occupancy,” said Butler. “People are giving us cheques for their first month's rent. It is no longer a wait list.”

The new seniors complex is a long awaited and much needed service in our community added Butler.

“There is no place for seniors to go in Cochrane,” said Butler during the CGV Builders corporate Cochrane Crunch sponsor's night at the Tim Horton Event's Centre on Feb 20th. “Not having any where for them to go is causing a seniors migration. This will allow seniors to stay right here in Cochrane.”

The new complex will be built by CGV builders and will be located at the north end of 12th Ave. The complex has yet to be named and Butler added they are looking for someone to acquire naming rights, “we have had 2 or 3 people speak to us but nothing has been confirmed,” said Butler.

“We are lucky in our community to have a developer like CGV here,” said Mayor Peter Politis who was also on hand at the CGV Corporate sponsor's night Cochrane Crunch game. “It is important for we develop our region and my hope is CGV will be that developer.”

Once CGV is done building the operations of the facility will be taken over by Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB) who will lease the complex from CGV said CDSSAB Area Manager Lee-Ann St. Jacques.

“We got involved because the community demonstrated a need for supported housing for seniors,” said St. Jacques. “So we (CDSSAB) go involved because it fills a need in our community and our goal is to offer the full spectrum services needed from independent living, support, geared to income rentals, and market rentals.”

Suites will include minis, bachelors, one and two bedrooms, and rentals will prices start at $1,390 per month. It will be an all inclusive facility. Rent will include heat, hydro, air conditioning, and internet. It will also include services such as three meals a day, housekeeping, bed linen laundry, a private patio for each suite, daily recreation activities, prescription medicine administration, a secure building with onsite mail delivery, and prescription medicine administration.

The smoke free building will offer amenities such as an activity room, laundry room, office spaces, guest room, sitting area, an outdoor walking path, and parking for residents and guests.

Suite amenities will include three different suites to choose from, a barrier free layout, walk-in showers with a seat and adjustable shower head, a small kitchenette, self controlled heat and air conditioning, carpet free floors, and generous closet space.

“The project has been well received,” said St. Jacques. “Occupancy is filling up fast and is first come first served.”

Those who have already signed up and people who were interested to learn more were invited to a Meet and Greet at Terry's Steakhouse on Thursday Mar. 5th.

“It was a chance for those seniors to come and meet their new neighbours and see their floor plans,” said Butler.

Butler added that 69 seniors attended the event which also included a question and answer period with the new site superintendent Denis Percy.

“I am very excited we are announcing this seniors housing,” said Mayor Politis. “We have been long awaiting for something like this in our community. “Very few communities have a facility like this in their community.”
