Michaels in Timmins closing

Post #1 by Head Honcho » Thu Apr 12, 2018 7:25 am

According to Timmins Today, there have been rumours about the closure recently, with the company now confirming the location in the west end of Timmins is closing June 26, 2018.

Another place closing that has been posting available jobs.

You will see lots more of these big box stores closing in the coming years, way cheaper for them to setup online.

Yes retailing is going through some big changes. Online shopping will impact some types of stores more than others.

But for Michaels I was surprised that a location opened in Timmins in the first place. I guess they looked at the regional market and figured that there would be enough business. The biggest problem is that our region has been losing population and that means they are serving a smaller market each year. The company is opening up a number of new locations in Ontario and Canada where there is growth. I don't know if the Timmins location was profitable or not but the company knows that the outlook isn't good if our population is declining.

It's not just Timmins that's losing its Michaels store as I read that there are 4 other locations closing in Canada. In the U.S. I've read that around 100 locations are closing.

Stratford's population in the 2016 census is 31,465 and is in a region with population growth. And I bet the average person has more spending money.

I've also heard that the Timmins location is closing due to disagreement over the amount of rent being paid. The same thing happened with Mark's which is part of the same development although with Mark's they moved back to the square.

I've driven by and never even noticed.

We need more creative accountants in this city.
