Trustees with District School Board Ontario North East have voted to close Frank P. Krznaric Whitney Public School in Porcupine. The vote was held during the April 15 regular Board meeting.

“Any school closure is difficult for all involved. Even though it has been a very tough decision, we believe it is in the best interest of our students. With the Ministry putting pressure on Boards to reduce vacant space, a tough choice had to be made,” commented Board Chairman Doug Shearer.

As part of an Accommodation Review process, a series of public meetings were held to gather feedback from the community. Effective September 1st 2014, Whitney Public School students will join students at Golden Avenue Public School. Notice of motion has been made to rename the new JK to Grade 6 school. Whitney Public School will be mothballed for a period of three years beginning September 1, at which time the Earl Street building and property could be sold.

A decision had already been made in January to move grade 7 and 8 students from both schools to their new space at Roland Michener Secondary School effective September 2014.

“The Brush boys attended Whitney Public School,” commented Board Vice-Chairman Bob Brush. “It is a school of high standards and values. But I believe that combining the two schools will be of great value. Through consolidation, there will be the development of an Early Learning program with a designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE). Consolidation will also eliminate the possibility of triple or quadruple grades in the future, as enrollments decline.”

“By combining the two schools there is a value to students, to the Board, to the economy, and to the community,” adds Director of Education Linda Knight. “We look forward to a new English Public JK to Grade 6 school, and a continued strong presence in the East End of Timmins.”
